COMMUNAL FAREWELL:
Video Discussion Board Connects
Nursing Students Graduating in a Pandemic

Picture
A school of nursing at a large midwestern university has created an innovative way for its nursing graduates to have a communal farewell.  A video discussion board was created for graduates to share their “Thoughts About the Journey…”
This one-minute video was posted to establish the purpose:

Nursing Class of 2020, please share your thoughts about the journey:
  • why you chose to become a nurse...
  • the journey of nursing school...
  • shout-out to friends...
  • goals/hopes for the future...
  • whatever you want to say.

Record up to a 5-minute video...
Free software was used:
  • FlipGrid made it easy to create and upload short videos with just a few clicks.
  • Settings were chosen that allow only students with approved university emails to post.  Maximum length was set at 5 minutes.
  • Participation was not mandatory; however, two extra credit points were offered.
  • Faculty posted two short videos to explain the purpose (above) and role model a post (below).
Graduate feedback was very positive:
  • “It’s powerful to hear the stories of our classmates -- I learned things I never knew.”
  • “Everyone has a different story and challenges they have gone through. Being able to hear the obstacles they overcame to get to this point makes me feel more connected to them.”
  • “I felt our nursing school journey, stories and hard work these past years were truly honored. The candle and tone that was set made it feel like a welcoming environment to express emotions of happiness, fear, and accomplishments.”
  • “I teared up a bit after speaking about the impact that my classmates and professors have had on me. I felt recognized and it really solidified that I was never alone and still am not in my nursing career.”
